East Coast Belgian Waffle makers, Wafel & Dinges, to open first location

outside of New York City at Mall of America®

BLOOMINGTON, MN — May 16, 2019
Wafel & Dinges, a family business known across New York City for their famous yellow food trucks, will open at Mall of America® later this year. It will be the very first store the company establishes outside of New York City. Serving authentic “Liège style” Belgian waffles, Wafels & Dinges will open their new space on level 3, West.

Since its founders, Thomas DeGeest and Rossanna Figuera, started roaming the streets of New York with their quirky 1968 Chevy truck, Wafels & Dinges has grown into much loved local institution. Waffle aficionados from all over the USA as well as international visitors have sought out the iconic yellow trucks to indulge into what many consider to be the most authentic Belgian waffle on this side of the Atlantic.

“At Wafels & Dinges we serve the “other” Belgian waffle, the one my sneaky Belgian country mates kept secret from the world. It’s packed with sugar pearls, imported and made from Belgian beets, that burst into irresistible caramelized flavors and a subtle touch of vanilla aromas,” says founder Thomas DeGeest, who is originally from the Belgian village of Bierbeek. “Our waffles are made out of dough, and not out of batter. These are the real Belgian deal”.

Guests can choose to build their own waffle by adding a variety of “dinges” (Belgian slang for “whatchamacallits) or toppings, including fresh strawberries, real Belgian chocolate fudge, Vermont maple syrup, whipped cream and a signature topping called “spekuloos”, which is a Belgian gingerbread cookie butter. Alternatively, they offer a choice of “Legendary Wafels”, which are the combinations that have proven the most popular in the last dozen years.

“After serving up these delicious waffles to east coast fans, we are honored that Wafel & Dinges chose Mall of America as their first location outside of New York City,” said VP of Leasing Carrie Charleston. “Delicious comfort food is what brings people together which is why these delectable flavors are the perfect choice to introduce to our 40 million annual visitors and into our robust mix of dining and treat options.”

Co-founder Rossanna Figuera mentioned Mall of America as her “Dream location” for expansion outside of New York City. “I have the fondest memories of visiting Mall of America as a kid during our family vacations. It was always the most anticipated day of the journey, so much fun, variety and great food!”

Wafels & Dinges currently operates 12 food trucks and kiosks in some of Manhattan’s most iconic locations, including Central Park, Times Square and Bryant Park. Since opening, Wafel & Dinges has been featured on the “Today Show” with Al Roker and have won numerous culinary awards including the 2010 winner of “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” and “Best Quick Serve Concept” by Time Out Magazine in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
